Backstage report on former Universal Champion being responsible for Jey Uso having to drop the World Heavyweight Championship

Jey Uso’s fairytale reign as WWE World Heavyweight Champion came crashing down on the June 9 edition of Monday Night Raw. In a shocking turn of events, Der Ring General — Gunther — reclaimed the gold, forcing Jey to submit in the center of the ring. Jey Uso had some interesting words for his rival after the bout.

The loss wasn’t just about Jey falling short — it was about WWE shifting gears. The Yeet Master’s time had to come to an end because of the impending return of a former Universal Champion – Goldberg.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this title change wasn’t originally planned. But Triple H made a game-time decision to elevate the stakes for an even bigger showdown: Gunther vs. Goldberg — now officially a title match — set for July 12 at Saturday Night’s Main Event. That same night, AEW will host All In, and WWE clearly intends to swing back hard.

Goldberg has reportedly been training for months for his farewell, although he recently admitted he’s battling physical limitations — particularly struggling to run without severe pain. Yet, even with his body failing, The Myth isn’t backing down.

Whispers suggest that Goldberg might sport different ring gear for this final war — perhaps a symbol of his evolution from dominant WCW destroyer to a mythic, battle-worn warrior writing the last page of his legacy.

All roads now lead to July 12, where Gunther’s iron rule collides with Goldberg’s final stand. His last match in WWE took place in 2022 against Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber, which he lost.

Will Gunther be able to retain the World Heavyweight Championship he won from Jey Uso?

It can be called Jey Uso’s bad luck that his title reign had to be cut short because Triple H wanted Gunther vs. Goldberg to be for the World Heavyweight Championship. What is a bit perplexing is that making the bout a title match makes it clear that Goldberg will lose… unless Triple H is planning a major swerve.

Sam Roberts of Notsam Wrestling podcast stated that Der Ring General should ‘destroy’ the former WCW Champion in order to establish himself as the most dominant man on the roster.

”Goldberg beat Lesnar. Goldberg beat Bray. Goldberg, he beats people. Now, if you want to stay true to the Gunther character, that would be the thinking going in like, I would love that if we went in going, ‘Oh man, they ended Jey’s title reign just to put the title on Gunther so that Goldberg could beat him’, and then Gunther just destroys him.”

The Austrian superstar might have appeared weak if he had lost to Jey Uso on RAW last week, and therefore not a credible threat to the returning Goldberg. The other explanation could be that Bill Goldberg explicitly asked Triple H to compete in a title match.
