Chelsea Green is undoubtedly one of WWE’s most recognisable and talked-about stars today, but her rise to the spotlight hasn’t come without its battles after she was released.
Between 2018 and 2020, Green made waves in NXT, eventually earning a call-up to SmackDown in late 2020. Unfortunately, a wrist injury sidelined her shortly after her debut. By April 2021, WWE released her due to prolonged inactivity.
During a recent appearance on the Lightweights Podcast, the Canadian wrestler opened up about her time away from the company and the calculated steps she took to make her WWE return a reality.
“I had to make sure the internet was constantly talking about me or Triple H would never hire me back,” Green admitted. “That was always the goal.”
She revealed that her husband, former WWE star Matt Cardona, had a feeling she was going to be released before it happened. His warning gave her time to prepare both emotionally and professionally. Green later negotiated an early release, allowing her to wrestle in Ring of Honor, IMPACT Wrestling, and across the independent scene—rebuilding her brand from the ground up. Eventually, her popularity with the fans resulted in the company hiring her back.
Major change in plans for Chelsea Green on SmackDown
She was scheduled to compete in a Queen of the Ring tournament match on SmackDown, the first-ever Women’s United States Champion was unable to make it to the show after reportedly missing her flight. In a video call segment aired on the blue brand, she pleaded with General Manager Nick Aldis to reschedule her match. Instead, Aldis appointed her Secret Hervice stablemate Alba Fyre as her replacement.
Fyre stepped into the ring against Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, and Candice LeRae. Ultimately, it was Miss Bliss who clinched the win and advanced to the semi-finals.
The former Impact Knockouts Champion has stated that she is very happy in her current role for the WWE and doesn’t have aspirations to be the top star.
