Drew McIntyre had ‘the worst moment of his life’ during feud with former WWE Champion

While taking time off from WWE to recover from injuries, Drew McIntyre has opened up about the punishing Hell in a Cell clash he had with CM Punk earlier this year.

The match, which took place at the Bad Blood premium live event in 2024, is now being remembered not only for its intensity but also for one of the most dangerous spots of McIntyre’s career.

The Scottish Warrior commented on his Hell in a Cell match with CM Punk:

Speaking on the Gorilla Position podcast, McIntyre revisited the brutal encounter and reflected specifically on the devastating bump he took onto the steel stairs. The Scottish Warrior described the move as a “one-and-done”—something so risky that he’ll never repeat it again.

>“That bump? That was for that match, that moment. I was convinced I could pull it off as safely as possible—and I did—but it was still borderline stupidity,” McIntyre admitted. “It landed right on my lower back. It worked out, thankfully, but I can say without a doubt: it’s not a risk I’ll ever take again.”

The match was the culmination of a deeply personal and intense rivalry between McIntyre and Punk. According to McIntyre, the emotional stakes were so high that he viewed the bout as a legacy-defining moment—comparable to legendary showdowns he idolised as a kid, like the unforgettable wars between Triple H and Mick Foley.

“I wanted this match to live forever,” he said. “And if it took something reckless to make that happen, I was ready to do it.”

Following the match, McIntyre continued working despite reportedly carrying several nagging injuries. He was finally written off television after losing a Steel Cage Match to Damian Priest at Saturday Night’s Main Event on May 24. There’s currently no official word on when he might return to action.

Drew McIntyre reveals the ”worst moment of his life”

Interestingly, McIntyre also referenced the aftermath of the Hell in a Cell match, calling a particular post-match segment the worst moment of his life—though he didn’t go into detail, leaving fans speculating about what truly happened once the cell door closed.

He could be referring to the disappointment he felt at the defeat despite dominating the entire match. Or maybe he knew that after this match was over, he would again be sidelined by Tripe H, which is exactly what happened.

Despite losing the match at Hell in a Cell, McIntyre proved yet again why he is one of the best performers in the company. Though fans expected a massive push for The Scottish Warrior after his ‘feud of the year’ with Punk, he was relegated to the mid-card and thrust into a lacklustre feud with Damian Priest.
