John Cena and CM Punk are on a collision course for what’s being billed as their final showdown — a blockbuster clash set for WWE’s Night of Champions Premium Live Event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. But if analyst Peter Rosenberg is to be believed, the ending might not be as straightforward as fans expect.
In the aftermath of Money in the Bank, Cena appeared on RAW and delivered a venomous promo that further entrenched his heel turn. The segment was interrupted by none other than CM Punk, and the tension between the two legends erupted into a verbal war. WWE wasted no time in making it official — Cena vs. Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
However, during an episode of the Cheap Heat podcast, popular media personality Peter Rosenberg floated an unexpected twist. He predicted that R-Truth, also known as Ron Killings, could ambush Punk mid-match, costing him the title opportunity via disqualification.
>“I wouldn’t hate it if R-Truth ended up in the main event, takes out CM Punk and causes the DQ,” Rosenberg said. “Then he just stares down Cena like, ‘This is mine. I’m coming for this title.’”
If Rosenberg’s hunch proves correct, the Night of Champions could mark not just an ending, but the beginning of a surreal new rivalry. Former US Champion R-Truth has adopted a more serious persona since his return at Saturday Night’s Main Event a few weeks ago. A lengthy feud with Cena could help his new character gain traction and would also provide fans with a fresh feud between two veterans.
At last month’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, John Cena went one-on-one with R-Truth in a non-title singles match. Despite a spirited effort from Truth, it was the Cenation Leader who walked away with the win. The two men are set to clash again on SmackDown this week, albeit in a non-title match.
However, Rosenberg shared a different vision for Ron Killings’ future. In the same discussion, Rosenberg argued that R-Truth is long overdue for a run with the WWE Championship — and boldly suggested that he could be the one to finally bring down the 48-year-old icon.
>“R-Truth getting a run with the title, even at this age, would work. It would be awesome,” said Rosenberg
While a WWE Championship run seems out of the question for now, Ron Killings could not only set up a feud with John Cena but also a program with CM Punk down the road if he interferes during their match at Night of Champions on June 28th.
