”You only fight with me”- Rey Mysterio reveals why his wife gets upset with him

Throughout his legendary, decades-spanning career, Rey Mysterio has stood tall as one of WWE’s most universally adored babyfaces. From his iconic underdog battles to his deep connection with fans around the world, Mysterio has never veered into villain territory—and for good reason. However, he revealed why his wife sometimes gets unhappy with ‘good’ behaviour.

The Master of 619 is one of the most beloved superstars in the company. Not just on-screen, but off-screen as well. What makes his 23-year run with the WWE even more amazing is that he has never turned heel during this time.

Rey Mysterio comments on never turning heel in WWE and his wife’s reaction

In a recent interview with WrestleZone, the WWE Hall of Famer opened up about why he’s never embraced a full heel persona, admitting that tapping into that darker side would be a genuine challenge for him. He also revealed what his wife of 30 years, Angie Gutierrez, has to say about this.

“They [fans] would really have to, like, push me to the edge,” Mysterio said. “Even my wife tells me, ‘I never see you get mad at anyone but me. Like, why don’t you fight with people? You only fight with me.’ So, it would be very hard for me to get pushed like that.”

Reflecting on his past, the Hall of Famer acknowledged that the closest he ever came to playing a heel was during his run in WCW with the Filthy Animals—a group known more for their swagger and attitude than outright villainy.

“I think the only time I’ve been close to becoming a heel—or maybe we were just having fun—was with the Filthy Animals. That’s as close as I’ve gotten,” he noted. “My personality is just very laid-back. It would be really hard for me to sell a heel character.”

When will Rey Mysterio return?

Outside the ring, the former WWE Champion is currently recovering from multiple injuries. According to longtime friend and lucha libre legend Konnan, Rey recently underwent surgery for a torn abductor muscle. Additionally, he’s been nursing a damaged eardrum, which has kept him on the sidelines since his last match on the March 29 episode of SmackDown.

During a recent podcast appearance, Konnan offered fans the first real update on Mysterio’s recovery timeline. Barring setbacks, the Master of the 619 isn’t expected to return to in-ring action before August.

As Rey continues to heal, fans will no doubt be counting down the days until the high-flying icon makes his triumphant return—still a babyface, still beloved, and still refusing to turn to the dark side.
