The longest-reigning WWE Champion in the modern era, Roman Reigns, could be set to retire soon.
The man once hailed as The Original Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns, made his WWE debut in 2010 and entered the main roster spotlight in 2012 as part of the iconic faction, The Shield. Over the years, Roman Reigns transformed from a promising powerhouse to the undisputed face of the company, headlining WrestleMania nine times and establishing a legacy etched in dominance.
Reigns also held one of the most historic title reigns in WWE history, reigning as the Undisputed WWE Champion for a staggering 1,316 days. That monumental run came to an end at WrestleMania 40, where Cody Rhodes finally finished his story and dethroned the Head of the Table on the grandest stage of them all.
However, his time at the top could be nearing its final chapter.
On the Behind The Turnbuckle: The Last Word podcast, former Interim RAW General Manager and wrestling analyst Jonathan Coachman shared a bold prediction. While discussing WWE’s ongoing struggle to build new main-event stars, Coachman stated that Roman Reigns may not be around much longer.
“Name somebody that you can say, ‘You know what? He or she is gonna be on the MSG marquee in five years to sell out Madison Square Garden.’ I don’t know that you have.
I’m saying in five years—Roman Reigns will be retired by then. Cody Rhodes? Who knows? So, who’s gonna be the next guy?”
This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about Reigns’ changing role in WWE. The 40-year-old has drastically reduced his in-ring schedule, wrestling only six times in 2024, with a 4-2 win-loss record.
As of June 18, 2025, he has wrestled just three matches this year and hasn’t appeared on WWE television since the RAW after WrestleMania 41 – after he was ‘taken out’ by Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker.
New reports further confirm Reigns’ shift into a “special attraction” status, akin to how WWE booked Brock Lesnar. This adjustment aligns with his limited appearances and signals the company’s strategy of preserving Reigns as a marquee draw for select high-profile events.
The Tribal Chief had re-signed with WWE in 2022 and had negotiated a much lighter contract. According to reports, he is the highest-paid WWE superstar on the roster, allegedly earning around $15 million.
While fans believed that Reigns would at least sign another 5-year-deal after his current contract expires in 2027, if The Coach is to be believed, then that might not be happening, and Reigns could be done in two to three years.
