John Cena gave the WWE Universe another stellar promo last week on SmackDown. However, instead of his usual rants, The GOAT channelled his inner CM Punk and laid down a ‘pipebomb’ of his own. The former flagbearer of WWE’s PG Era had some choice words for Punk and even used expletive language.
Former WWE head writer Vince Russo has weighed in on John Cena’s explosive promo from this week’s SmackDown, which reignited one of wrestling’s most iconic rivalries.
Cena, who was in action this past Friday, delivered a searing message after putting CM Punk through a table. In a bold move, he echoed lines from Punk’s legendary 2011 pipebomb — only to flip the narrative. The 17-time World Champion ridiculed Punk, stating that the “Best in the World” moniker only applied for about seven minutes back then — and that Punk has been irrelevant ever since.
On this week’s BroDown podcast with host Mac Davis, Russo praised the impact of the segment. He pointed out how the audience shifted from playful crowd participation to stunned silence once Cena grabbed the mic. According to Russo, this was a prime example of how wrestling should feel real — and something WWE’s Chief Creative Officer, Triple H, needs to pay closer attention to when crafting storylines.
The former WWE and WCW head writer warned Triple H that he needs to make changes to his style of storytelling and make it more authentic. This will allow the fans to get engrossed more in the product, like they did during Cena’s promo.
“Bro, these marks are playing along like this is a parody of a wrestling show. They don’t have any respect for the wrestling show. We’re singing, ‘What! What! What!’ Then all of a sudden, a guy cuts a shoot promo, and we get a totally, totally different audience. I gotta tell you, Triple H, read the room. I don’t know what to tell you. Read the room, man.”

Cena’s fiery words have sent shockwaves across the WWE Universe, blurring the lines between storyline and reality. With the momentum now surging, all eyes turn to Night of Champions next Saturday, where Cena and Punk are set to collide in what promises to be a deeply personal battle.
The two men have had a storied rivalry spanning a decade. There are numerous matches where both men have shown their mettle and proven that they have unmatchable chemistry. Despite not having faced each other in 13 years, fans hope their match at Night of Champions will join the list of their greatest matches ever.
Though fans want Punk to win his first championship since returning to WWE, Cena will likely retain. Since Cena is primed to face the winner of the King of the Ring tournament at SummerSlam, it would be a good guess that the feud between these two men will end at Night of Champions and this will most probably the last match between the two icons.
